Meet the Staff
Laura Ferris (she/her) is a Provincial Advocacy Coordinator for ECPJS’s Visiting Committee project. She is also employed at Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia working on systemic advocacy for survivor’s of gender-based violence and human trafficking. Laura is a member of the 7th Step Society of Nova Scotia. She is a recent Social Work graduate from Dalhousie University (2021) and has completed a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology and Psychology from Saint Mary's University (2019).

Margaret Anne McHugh (she/her) has been a social justice advocate and prison abolitionist for decades. She has joined ECPJS as an Advocacy Coordinator. Most recently, and prior to working for ECPJS, she worked for a union, as a worker representative, organizer, and education officer. She has been a Vice President of both the Halifax and Dartmouth District Labour Council and the N.S. Federation of Labour. She has also worked in the Ontario civil service, in health professions' regulation, and for the advancement of women. Her work experience includes the education sector, especially teaching and curriculum development for the Michener Institute of Applied Health sciences, (Now Michener Institute of Education - health sciences education.) As a volunteer she has been President of a Nova Scotia political party, (currently First VP), and, she spent more than 4 years as an active volunteer, and as a Board member, of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland N.S. She was the Founder of the Mayworks Halifax Festival of Working People and the Arts, and managed the festival for the first 4 years. She remains as treasurer, active member of the Board, and festival volunteer, because she believes strongly in using the arts for social change. She is familiar with adjudicative bodies like labour hearings and tribunals, public consultations, and with professional regulation. She is an experienced and passionate speaker and writer.
